Some tips and tricks that might be helpful.
09-09-07 Wow! Its been a long time since I put this page up. Geocaching has certainly come a long way since then. I've been out of the sport, life gets in the way of fun sometimes. I'm glad to see geocaching.com has done well, and the sport has taken off like it did. If you are reading this page, sorry I never kept it up to date. The few tips and tricks are still good, but the GPSR recommendations are way out of date. And the traveling candle? Well, it was a great idea, and I miss it, but things happen.
9-20-00 I got my Magellan 315 almost two years ago and have had a lot of fun with it. I've used it fishing ("Where did we hook that fish yesterday?"), hiking ("Now, which way back to the car?") and driving ("Was that our exit?"). I use a clunky old HP laptop that is running OziExplorer hooked into the M315 for a cheap and effective moving map display. I am currently using USGS DRG's that I download, but they take up a HUGE amount of diskspace.

10-9-00 Went out searching for this cache on 10-8-00 with a film crew from techtv.com. It was pretty fun, even though my wife and I are painfully camera shy. The guys from techtv were great. We spent about 4 hrs filming every facet of the "geo-hunt". All that work will be distilled down to a 3 minute spot on the show "Internet Tonight". Hopefully that was my 15 minutes because it was way too much work for a 3 minute spot. (I lost count of how many times I had to unpack the cache to get it on tape!) Still, if it gets more people interested in it then I did some good.
Which GPS receiver is right for you?
11-04-00 Finally got to see the segment on techtv. All I can say is that I know I'll never be a movie star! It didn't turn out as bad as I thought it would, although Dan "The Man" Kerman did set me up for a few of the lines they quoted from me. Oh well. It fits in with the whole tone of the show. I'm glad we did it. Here is the segment on techtv's site.
12-27-00 Went on a great vacation and found this cache. Thats right, Australia! WOOHOO! What a place! This sign did make us wonder just what might have gone on in the place... ;) More pictures of our little cache hunt in Australia are here.
01-13-01 Went searching for this cache with El-Davo. Found it with little trouble. Started reading the logbook and found that Dave had already been there! He never said a word the whole time we were looking for it. See, I had it in my head that this cache was on another point, about 18 miles south. So I drove there and Dave tagged along thinking we were going to a new cache. When we got to where I "knew" the cache was, I checked the GPS and we were south by several miles. After some head scratching I realized I drove to the wrong place! Even though I had the GPS on and Dave was checking the map, I said it was here (Chimney Rock). Duh! So, we grabbed a cup of coffee and drove to the right place. Like one of my flight instructors repeated to me over and over, "Trust your instruments!" We left a red candle as a traveling cache item. I had taken the candle from a cache in Australia (Devil Bend) and now we have sent it on another leg of its 'round the world journey. Hopefully someone will take this to another cache. If you did this, drop me a note and I'll up-date its it's website.
02-17-01 Found this cache. Its in a really nice location for being in the SF metro area. Some lady's dog was real interested in me and the cache, but the lady didn't seem to take too much notice.
